Our story

Auld Acquaintances was founded by a group of London-based Scottish Jews. Whilst we took the low road south, the high road north remains very much in our hearts. The idea of Auld Acquaintances was borne out of this strong feeling of belonging, despite moving away from the land of our birth.

We are a registered charity and our aim is to do our bit on behalf of Scottish-Jewish ex-pats to support the welfare charities that do such a fantastic job caring for our families, friends and community back in Scotland. Whilst we recognise the great work and support by those of you still living in Scotland, we feel we want to do our bit to help too. These welfare charities suffer through our absence and our collective decision to leave. They need and deserve our support.

We are continuing the great work of Glasgow Girls, a charity that began in London in 2007 and has raised over £60,000 to date for Scottish-Jewish causes. Glasgow Girls has passed the candle to our slightly younger hands.

The Auld Acquaintances Facebook Group was established to build on our strong feeling of belonging by reuniting members of the Tartan Tribe around the world, principally through reminiscence, ensuring we don't forget where we all came from and helping raise the awareness of the issues facing independent Scottish-Jewish welfare charities - with the aim of raising funds. To say it's been a wee bit overwhelming to see how many people have joined and enjoyed the Facebook Group, sharing such amazing memories and good times is a massive understatement. It's been pure dead brilliant. Please keep posting your comments as we know everyone is loving it and it's putting a smile on so many faces. You are free to post whatever you wish so long as it is not deemed offensive or is soliciting for any one charity, as we are a charity ourselves.

We have a few ideas how we can do our bit to help and we'll share these with you as they develop. This will include arranging a number of fundraising events.  Our inaugural event was a ceilidh in London in January 2018 which generated over £20,000 for our causes.

We welcome any other similar initiatives in Israel, America, Australia, Canada or wherever else you've been posting from. What we don't want, however, is for this to stop you donating to Scottish-Jewish charities that you are already supporting. We don't want to disrupt any current funding for those charities, we only want to make sure that everyone is doing their bit for the community that helped shape us - we are all members of the Tartan Tribe.
